Summary

Maïa Africa was founded by Gérard Niyondiko, a Burundian refugee in Burkina Faso. The mission of this B-corp-certified social company is to help African families get more protected against malaria.

They have developed MAÏA, the first mosquito-repellent ointment able to repel malaria mosquitoes for more than 8 hours after application. Half a million MAÏA jars have been distributed in areas most affected by the disease, in particular to internally displaced people in Burkina Faso.

Investment Thesis

An African child dies of malaria every two minutes. The African continent accounts for 95% of malaria cases and 96% of malaria deaths. Children under 5 are the most vulnerable group, accounting for 80% of all deaths.

  • Health Impact
By scaling MAÏA’s distribution, more families in malaria-prone areas will have access to effective mosquito protection, leading to a reduction in malaria cases, especially among vulnerable groups like children. We will particularly target refugees and internally displaced people.
  • Economic Empowerment
Maïa Africa’s business model includes partnerships with NGOs and key accounts, creating opportunities for income generation and employment, particularly for community agents and distributors.
  • Education and awareness
Through marketing and outreach campaigns, Maïa Africa can raise awareness about malaria prevention strategies, promote health education, and encourage proactive measures against the disease.

Refugee Impact

Maïa Africa is led by Gérard Niyondiko, a Burundian refugee in Burkina Faso. The organization focuses on creating humanitarian projects that provide direct assistance to refugees and displaced individuals through product distribution.

Through adhering to RLI criteria, including refugee ownership, leadership, and direct support for refugee communities, Maïa Africa showcases a dedicated commitment to empowering refugees, promoting economic inclusion, and fostering social impact.
